Winter is Coming – Johnnie Walker White

[Total: 0    Average: 0/5]

In celebration of the final season of the critically-acclaimed HBO series, Game of Thrones, Johnnie Walker is proud to introduce White Walker by Johnnie Walker. The single malt whiskey takes its name from the feared supernatural creatures who inhabit the frozen lands north of The Wall on the fantasy megahit.

This new blend perfectly reminds Johnnie Walker and Game of Thrones fans alike that “Winter is Here.” The limited-edition bottle utilizes thermochromic ink to give fans a frosty surprise message when frozen. With flavor notes like caramelized sugar, vanilla, and fresh red berries, White Walker by Johnnie Walker makes for a delicious serve. The new blend is best-served ice cold, inspired by the White Walkers beyond The Wall.

The limited-edition whiskeys are inspired by the iconic characters and the creative world of Westeros and beyond and are here to tide fans over during their wait for the eighth and final season. Even the most revered Maester couldn’t have predicted a collaboration of this monumental proportion.

“Groundbreaking partnerships continue to be a strategic initiative for Diageo as they foster exceptional creative collaboration and help showcase the breadth of our portfolio. We are very proud to have our collection of single malts and Johnnie Walker, the number one Scotch whiskey brand in the world, collaborate with HBO’s most successful TV franchise to develop these limited-edition offerings for fans to collect and celebrate the final season of Games of Thrones,” said Dan Sanborn, Senior Vice President, Culture and Partnerships at DIAGEO.

“We knew there was fan appetite for a Game of Thrones whiskey and once we saw Diageo’s vision for a way to collaborate together we knew the idea was perfect and the time was now. From the beginning, they understood that we wanted to create something special, and they’ve accomplished that with both White Walker by Johnnie Walker and the single malt collection. We’re confident fans will enjoy sipping these delicious whiskeys as they wait for season eight and beyond,” said Jeff Peters, Vice President, Licensing & Retail at HBO.

Be sure to come in and grab your very own bottle to celebrate the final season!!

Old Forester – 1910 Old Fine Whisky

[Total: 1    Average: 4/5]

The fourth and final version in Old Forester’s Whiskey Row series has been released. The 1910 Old Fine Whiskey, a double-barreled whiskey, represents a specific point in Old Forester’s storied 150-year-old history. A fall fire that happened at the distillery in 1910 spurred a happy accident that led to the casking process that led to the Old Fine Whiskey.

Whiskey Row Series

Started in 2014, the Whiskey Row series tells the story of Old Forester’s one-of-a-kind history, highlighting significant milestones and innovations in production along the way. This series includes the 1870 Original Batch, a small batch bourbon pulling from three distinct warehouses, meant to reference founder George Garvin Brown’s original batching process; the 1897 Bottled in Bond, a small batch of barrels from one distilling season, in the same year, aged in a federally bonded warehouse for a minimum of four years; and 1920 Prohibition Style, which represents a barrel strength of the prohibition era when Old Forester was granted one of just ten permits nationally to continue being sold as a medicinal whiskey. The last of the series is the 1910 Fine Old Whisky.

Thanks to a Fire

On one October day in 1910, a fire caused the bottling line to be shut down at Old Forester’s distillery for an extended period of time. To make things worse, there was a vat of mature whiskey waiting to be bottled. Instead of pouring out the whiskey or letting it sit until ruin, the distillers at Old Forester decided to store the vat in new, charred oak containers until the line could be repaired. This resulted in the first documented double-barreled whiskey, which was new for Old Forester and remarkable enough to become a new barreling method.

Today’s Bourbon

In order to replicate the 1910 methods, the distilling team took mature bourbon from their inventory and had it go through a second barreling process in a lightly toasted, heavily charred barrel. I was then bottled at 93 proof. At 93 proof, this whiskey is at the right weight to challenge the other Whiskey Row Series. Popular opinion has the Prohibition 1920 series as the favorite, but with 1910 coming out, there could be a new favorite of the series.

The finished product has aromas of buttercream, sticky toffee, cedar, and apricot, with smooth, well-rounded taste mingling sweet oatmeal raisin cookie and milk chocolate, leading into caramel corn and evolving spice, according to Old Forester’s tasting notes.

August Hot Item – Crown Royal

[Total: 0    Average: 0/5]

When it comes to Canadian whiskey, Crown Royal literally takes the crown. It’s been the best-selling Canadian whiskey for some time in the world market and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. You can find it anywhere from fine restaurants, on airplanes and the shelves of any liquor store you stroll into.

History

Crown Royal can trace its lineage back to 1939 when Seagram’s introduced a new product to honor a visit from Britain’s monarchs, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. The story goes that Seagram’s had tried hundreds of variations – around 600 to be exact – before settling on a concoction that was deemed worthy. Once the right blend was found, Seagram’s bottled it in a quilted crown-shaped bottle and packaged it in a purple pouch. The pouch was purple because it is a color long associated with royalty.

With its production facilities in Gimli, Manitoba, Crown Royal is now owned by spirits giant Diageo. Every bottle of Crown contains some combination of five different whiskeys, aged in a variety of new and used casks. Like keys on a piano, these whiskeys give blenders a different note that either plays harmony with each other or emphasize a taste.

Serving Suggestions

Round and soft, this is an unchallenging, easy-drinking whiskey that may leave “serious” drinkers bored, but sure makes a great highball. It’s also enjoyable in a crystal tumbler neat or on the rocks.

Nose

Faint notes of vanilla and fresh, out-of-the-oven lemon bread. There isn’t really a scent of alcohol here like other blended whiskeys.

Palate

A sip of Crown will introduce gentle vanilla and honey notes. “Delicate” in a word is a great way to describe how these flavors intermix with each other. Tasters will also note a faint oak in the background, which is thanks to the aging process in the casks.

Finish

The finish on Crown is light, balanced, and almost too easy to drink prompting some more sips. There isn’t the typical burn of a heavier bourbon.

This August, we will be featuring Crown Royal as our hot item of the month. Stop by and pick up a bottle for yourself for $23.99 for a 754ml bottle.

WhistlePig FarmStock

Farm-to-Bottle: WhistlePig FarmStock

[Total: 0    Average: 0/5]

Farm-to-fork eating is all craze today. We want to know that what we are putting into our bodies is fresh. Straight from the ground and onto our plates. Well, we should be thinking the same way about the drinks we put into our bodies.  Especially when it comes to alcoholic beverages with unknown amounts of sugar and additives. WhistlePig had a vision of creating a true farm-to-bottle whiskey and they did just that. WhistlePig FarmStock whiskey was created.

WhistlePig FarmStock Whiskey “is the manifestation of the dream that launched the company: to produce the finest whiskey in the world from our Vermont farm.” Farmstock is a blended rye whiskey made of young estate whiskey, five and six-year estate ryes, and MPG 12-year whiskey stock. This 86 proof blend really embraces the spiciness of both the local grains and wood. It is amber to the eye and bottle at 43% ABV.WhistlePig FarmStock

Nose: Deep and complex aromas, there is a lot going on here. It is mostly made of a rich woody oak. It has subtle hints of dark, salt caramel and then it leaves on a nice fruity note. The grain-forward nature of this whiskey is said to leave an air of baking bread in the nostrils.

Palate: Despite the sweetness in the nose, the palate accentuates the dryer aspects of this whiskey. Again, predominantly oaky there are sweeter florally flavors at the end with hints of citrus and stone fruit.

Finish: Intricate and enduring finish featuring winter fruit, dark chocolate, tobacco, butterscotch, and vanilla founded in classic rye spice.

Try the WhistlePig FarmStock Manhattan. Combine 2oz FarmStock, 1/2oz Sweet Vermouth, 2 dashes of Angostura. Garnish with a Cherry and wa-la! You know what you’re getting with this whiskey and that’s a true farm-to-bottle whiskey. Heck, it’s even bottled in a barn! You can reserve your own bottle of WhistlePig Farmstock here.

Old Ripy Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Old Ripy Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

[Total: 1    Average: 1/5]

If you’re a serious bourbon drinker then you’re about to love this 2017 Old Ripy Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. As part of Campari America’s new Whiskey Barons Collection, Old Ripy is a recreation of a whiskey born in 1868 to James Ripy. James was an Irish immigrant and a well-known piece in Anderson County’s busting distilling community in Bourbon’s heartland. With the help of his family, James’s Whiskey was kept alive on site of the current Wild Turkey Distillery, where it is currently being produced, up until 1950.

This 2017 Old Ripy Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is special because it is the closest recreation to the original whiskey there’s ever been. It Is a combination of different aged Whiskeys. While 8 to 12-year old Whiskey’s dominate in the combination there are traces of younger Whiskeys. The actual ingredients are undisclosed; however, it is assumed to be around 75% corn, 13% rye and 12% malted barley. This deep amber whiskey is bottled at 52% ABV, aged in Timber warehouses and non-chill filtered. This is to retain congeners, fusil oils, lipid fats and proteins that were believed to be in the original Old Ripy Whiskey. The result of this process is a natural, complex flavor profile with fuller body and a smooth mouthful.

The most appealing part of this Bourbon Whiskey is the profile, it’s the part you’ve all been waiting for and the part that’s sure to make you bourbon lovers want to snag a bottle. Old Ripy Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey has a toasted oak and fruity nose, described like a medley of vanilla, raisins, apples and bananas. Ardbeg Kelpie Whisky

Ardbeg Kelpie Whisky – Master of Malt

[Total: 0    Average: 0/5]

Ardbeg Kelpie Whisky

Ardbeg has been made on the small, remote Scottish Isle of Islay for over 200 years. Ardbeg Kelpie gets its name from the legends of the shape-shifting kelpie that revolve around the sea of Ardbeg. They say that the kelpie can take the form of a horse, or a bull, and may have claws, or even be a dog with the head of an ant that flies. Robert Burns once wrote about this mysterious creature in his poems. This Ardbeg Kelpie is a limited-edition whiskey that released in March of 2017. This whiskey is 100% malted barley from a single distillery and dried with peat. It is matured in an ex-bourbon cask and a virgin cask made from Adyghe republic oak and bottled at 46% ABV.

Ardbeg Kelpie is burnished gold in color and is a wonderfully intense whiskey. Each person experiences the nose, taste, and finish a little differently. There are many intertwined aromas that have been described as powerful, dark chocolatey, or sea-weedy with also a bit of spicy black pepper. The taste is far harder to determine, to each their own ideas, whether it’s smoked bacon, roasted peanuts, or ginger and nutmeg, the taste is just as shape-shifty as the tales around it. The finish seemingly lasts forever with deep, slightly dry flavors of gentle smoke and rich toffee. The Ardbeg Kelpie has a vast profile of official flavors all the way from smoky to floral. This might just be the fun, flavored, and mysterious whiskey you need to spice up your night.

This limited-edition Ardbeg Kelpie was intended to be released for the members of the Ardbeg Committee; however, a few retailers in the US were lucky enough to snag some bottles, including us! No proof of membership is required to purchase a bottle, let us know if you are interested in reserving a bottle at your nearest location. We hope you enjoy this wonderful whiskey, let us know what you think. Cheers!

Crown Royal Noble

Crown Royal Noble Collection

[Total: 1    Average: 4/5]

Crown Royal is stepping up their game with a new Noble Collection, which honors the brand’s monarchy roots. The first release in the Noble Collection is Crown Royal Cornerstone Blend Canadian Whiskey. It’s a combination from three of Crown Royal’s fundamental whiskeys: a spicy Canadian rye, a coffee still whiskey and a bourbon-style whiskey aged in charred American white oak. The final product produces a deep gold whiskey with strong flavors and a soft finish.

The Crown Royal Noble Collection was designed to honor the monarchy that reigned its Canadian roots. Understanding the history of Crown Royal and its brand will help you understand the distinct importance of this limited release. In 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth set off to visit Canada. This was a big deal because no other monarchy had traveled to North America to visit the country. A Canadian spirits entrepreneur heard of their expected arrival and wanted to create a whiskey that was exceptional for the King and Queen. He wanted perfection, so he tried more than 600 blends before deciding the final blend of 50 whiskeys. Exceptionally smooth, this whiskey blend was fit for royalty and was even presented in a decanter wrapped with regal purple bag and gold stitching, just like it is today.

To this day, Crown Royal is proud to continue the tradition of producing whiskey fit for a King. For even the most discerning of palates, Crown Royal’s whiskey is considered one of the finest whiskeys of all. And the Crown Royal Noble Collection is no different. Inspired by the monarchy that led to the first bottle ever created, the Cornerstone Blend is perfect for whiskey lovers everywhere. On the nose, you can expect ride fruits, malted grain, toffee, and vanilla. The palate is balanced, with notes of sweet caramel, toasted grains, subtle oak and tropical fruits. The tart fruit flavors continue into the finish, ending with a gentle woody spice.

The first release in this collection has been long anticipated. Be the first to try this extraordinary blend and let us know what you think! Bottles will hit our stores this week. Stop by your local Payless Liquors or reserve your bottle online.
