GET FUZZED!

An opportunity to develop a unique tasting product with a notable name came about in early 2005 and legendary golfer, Frank Zoeller jumped on it to create Fuzzy’s Premium Vodka.

With the premium vodka market being so competitive, Frank Zoeller, better known as “Fuzzy”, still felt the urge to produce a truly distinctive product. Fuzzy has considered vodka tonic his signature drink and was in search of a vodka that surpassed his taste expectations. AftPayless- Fuzzy'ser almost four years of research and implementation, Fuzzy’s Premium Vodka was launched in 2009.

Fuzzy Zoeller is not only known for his outstanding golf record but also his charismatic character and charitable work. Fuzzy has won the PGA Tour ten times and continues to play on the Champions Tour from year to year. He is often noted for whistling his way down the fairway adding to his already popular outgoing personality.

As a contributor on and off the green, Fuzzy is also known for his golf course design. Overtime, he has designed nineteen courses, 3 being locations for the PGA Tour event. Fuzzy also owns two golf courses located in Southern Indiana, Covered Bridge Golf Club and Champions Pointe Golf Club.

Now back to the vodka…

Fuzzy’s Premium Vodka acquired its award winning taste because of its unique production process. Fuzzy’s Vodka is distilled five times from American corn and then filtered ten times through charcoal and lava. After, a portion of the distillate is reposed in new oak barrels and then finished off by adding some of the purest water known in the world from Cascade Mountain. By using this extremely rare process, they were able to achieve Fuzzy’s noteworthy and exceptional smooth, creamy, crisp taste.

The brand continues to grow throughout the United States and around the world. Fuzzy’s has recently introduced its Limited Edition 750 mil bottle to commemorate the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 Race.

You will soon be able to find this limited edition bottle at your favorite Payless Liquor store, just in time for the race! We recommend reserving a bottle through the Contact Us page to ensure you get your hands on this limited edition bottle from Fuzzy’s Premium Vodka! GET FUZZED!

Hatfield & McCoy Family Brand Whiskey

Land disputes, a hog, a forbidden romance, a New Year’s Day massacre, and revenge all played a hand in the infamous Hatfield & McCoy Feud.  The legendary feud is an American tale of family, honor, and vengeance. In the end, twelve family members died, seven were sentenced to life in jail, and one had been sentenced to be hanged.

54c0178e527fe.imageNow, nearly 150 years later, the descendants of Randall McCoy and “Devil” Anse Hatfield have come together to partner on The Legendary Hatfield & McCoy Family Brand Whiskey.

The goal of this American Whiskey was simple: make an exclusive, top-quality whiskey inspired by family recipes that anyone can afford and be proud to drink. The Hatfield and McCoy families searched for a partner who could take their 150 years of moonshine and whiskey tradition and do what their ancestors never could—make it legal.

They finally found Local Choice, an award-winning distiller out of Charleston, South Carolina, to partner with them to make a whiskey worthy of their legendary names.

With its bold, yet balanced flavor, Hatfield & McCoy whiskey can easily be enjoyed straight, on the rocks, or in your favorite cocktail. The 80-proof whiskey is made of corn, barley, malt, and special strains of yeast. In the glass, it’s honey-colors and has light legs.

The aroma is sweet, with hints of vanilla, grass, and honey.  The whiskey is light on the palate with layers of pepper, smoke, dried apricot and walnut. The finish is clean and balanced with hints of caramel, vanilla and butter.

Metze’s Select

Historic Lawrenceburg, IN distillery, MGP, is branching out. Master Distiller, Greg Metze has spent his nearly 40-year career at MGP. And now he’s combined his passion with his natural sense of what makes a great whiskey. Introducing Metze’s Select.Metze's Select

Metze’s Select combines some of MGP’s favorite whiskeys to produce a well-balanced bourbon. Metze’s features a Lawrenceburg-style high rye characteristic that combines spicy notes with creamy vanilla and caramel. The 2015 medley is comprised of:

38% 2006 Bourbon (21% Rye)
3% 2006 Bourbon (36% Rye)
59% 2008 Bourbon (21% Rye)

Sweet from the start, the nose has notes of butterscotch, chocolate, and menthol. The palate takes that sweetness and has a creme brulee character, with hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, brown butter, and some cherry on the finish. At 93 proof Metze’s is manageable without water — and the alcohol really just serves to boost the spicy component.

MGP (Midwest Grain Products) of Indiana is a distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. The distillery was founded in 1847 and currently produces a range of distilled beverages from straight rye whiskey, bourbon whiskey, and neutral spirits like gin and vodka.

Only 6,000 hand-numbered bottles of Metze’s Select were made. Contact Payless today to reserve your bottle!

Hochstadter’s Vatted Rye Whiskey

With a complex blend of hand-selected straight rye whiskeys, Cooper Spirits has released Hochstadter’s Vatted Straight Rye Whiskey.  Hochstadter’s has been aged 14-15 years with a blend of whiskeys from distilleries across North America. Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Alberta, Canada.

hochstadters-vatted-rye-bottleThis Rye Whiskey is made via a process known as vatting—a method traditionally used in Scotch production where single-malt whiskies are blended together without the addition of grain spirit. The vatting process created a smooth and full-flavored straight rye whiskey with notes of blackstrap, nutmeg, mace, clove, German-style rye bread and sour cherry. The spirit is non-chill filtered to preserve its nuances and robustness.

“I hand-selected each of the ryes in this blend to create an incredibly flavorful spirit that we believe will be a unique asset to the bartending community and whiskey fans,” says Robert Cooper, third-generation distiller and Founder of The Cooper Spirits Co. “With a significant portion of 8-year-old rye, Hochstadter’s Vatted Straight Rye Whiskey is smoother yet more complex than the many one-dimensional ryes currently on the market. It’s the ultimate expression of maximum intensity with impeccable balance.”

Hochstadter’s can be enjoyed straight, over ice, or as a rich cocktail ingredient in classic cocktails like the old fashioned the Manhattan or  julep.  Contact us today to reserve your bottle of this Vatted Rye Whiskey today.

Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut

Founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot-Muiron, Veuve Clicquot played an important role in establishing champagne as a favored drink of the upper class throughout Europe.  Philippe owned a number of vineyards decided to establish Clicquot House wines.  When he passed in 1805, he left his widow, Barbe, in control of a company. Madame Clicquot became the first woman to take over a Champagne house. The French word for window is Veuve.

bouteille-champ_yellow-prodBy 1866 Veuve Clicquot had become both a substantial Champagne house and a respected brand. Recognized by its distinctive bright yellow labels, the wine holds a royal warrant from Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.

Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label has grapes from 50 to 60 growing areas. They include approximately 55% Pinot Noir, 20% Pinot Meunier and the remainder Chardonnay. Each grape helps ensure the structure, round out the blend, and provide a balanced wine’s elegance & sophistication.

The appearance of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label looks beautiful. A golden yellow color adorned with a foaming necklace of bubbles.

On the nose, it begins with hints of white fruits, followed by vanilla and brioche. Note the fine balance between the fruity aromas coming from the grape varieties and the toasty aromas following the ageing in the bottle.

On the palate, the initial sip delivers a combination of freshness and forcefulness which is synonymous with Yellow Label. This is a classic Brut Champagne.

Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label is an ideal aperitif or companion to a white meat, white fish or pasta dish.

You can purchase a bottle of Veuve Clicquot at your favorite Payless store for just $39.99, perfect to ring in 2016!

Barterhouse & Rhetoric Available at Bourbon Women Sip & Shop

Based out of Tullahoma, Tennessee, The Orphan Barrel Whiskey Company was founded with the mission to share barrels of rare and delicious whiskeys. Every year, barrels are overlooked and nearly forgotten in the back of distilleries around the world. These “lost” whiskeys have become a legend and Orphan Barrel has made it their goal to bottle these rare whiskeys for the world to try.

In order to guarantee that these whiskeys are treated with the care they deserve, each barrel is hand bottled by knowledgeable and responsible curators. Due to their origins as forgotten barrels, many of the bottles produced by Orphan Barrel are only available once. Once they’re gone, they’re gone for good.

img-the-bar-collection_0055_orphan-barrel-barterhouseOne of these rare finds is Barterhouse. After being aged for twenty years in American oak barrels, most whiskeys are mellowed…but not this one. One barrel turned out perfect. For just one barrel, those twenty years were the right length of time to craft perfection. The distillers had written this barrel off as a failure. They believed that its perfection was just a false rumor. But Orphan Barrel didn’t believe them and wanted to give this barrel a chance. As it turned out, the distillers were wrong, and the rumors were true.

Barterhouse is bottled at just over 90 proof. Upon pouring a glass, scents of oak, almonds, nutmeg, and cherry fill the air. The first sip is heavy on the oak and spice, mixing well with mint flavors. The finish is long and warm with vanilla and caramel perfectly dulling the potentially overwhelming spice.

Unfortunately, this delicious whiskey is an extremely rare find due to the single barrel available for bottling. And once it’s gone — it’s gone forever.

But Orphan Barrel has recently released other unique whiskeys, including Rhetoric. Unlike img-the-bar-collection-_0076_orphan-barrel-rhetoricBarterhouse, Orphan Barrel has been releasing better tasting, more complex versions of Rhetoric each year. And each new year brings with it more mature flavors and character. This year, the whiskey has been aged 21 years.

At first sight, there isn’t much of a difference between last year’s Rhetoric and this year’s version. However, the difference and improvements are obvious with as much as the first smell. The scent is still dominated by oak, but the apple, caramel, cinnamon, and orange scents are more prominent. The taste is soft and well-rounded with baked apple, caramel, and oak mixing perfectly with the spices. The finish lasts just the right amount of time, not too long, not too short. It is fairly dry with strong citrus flavors.

It seems as though Orphan Barrel’s annual releases of Rhetoric are somewhat of a showcase, allowing their followers to see the process of aging for themselves. Many whiskey connoisseurs see this as a dream come true.

Both of these Orphan Barrel creations can be bought at our Bourbon Women event, December 5 at our Greenwood Mall store.

Wild Turkey Master’s Keep

Wild Turkey’s master distiller Jimmy Russell used to believe that bourbon is best when aged between 8 and 12 years, claiming that any longer and the bourbon loses its vanilla and caramel flavors. Well, it looks like he has changed his mind! Alongside his son, Eddie, he has released a new 17-year bourbon by the name of Master’s Keep.

Master’s Keep is the oldest bourbon that Wild Turkey has ever released to the American market. Originally distilled in 1996, Jimmy and Eddie were forced to place the barrels in a brick warehouse due to a shortage of space in their usual metal-sided warehouses. Over the years, the pair began to notice a different taste which they attributed to the lack of circulation and lower temperatures of the brick warehouse. Instead of dumping these barrels as a failure, they continued to allow the bourbon to age longer to what turned out to be near perfection.

IMG_2332

After 17 years, the father-son team discovered that unlike most bourbons, these barrels had lessened in proof over time. Bottled at a barrel-proof of around 87 proof, Master’s Keep still has the same light amber coloring and sour corn scent of the rest of Wild Turkey’s bourbons, but the difference is in the taste.

Proving himself wrong, Jimmy Russell’s Master’s Keep was able to maintain the caramel and vanilla taste throughout the aging process. These flavors mixing with honey, oak, and a chocolate bitterness make room for a slightly sour yet dry finish, setting it apart from other Wild Turkey bourbons.

Master’s Keep was released to the American market just last month! Request your bottle today by using our Contact Us form and be among the first to taste the newest Wild Turkey bourbon!

Bourbon Season: Parker’s Heritage Collection 8th Edition

The wait is finally over, Parker’s Heritage Collection Edition 8 is now available for purchase. The much anticipated 2014 edition is part of a series of rare, limited edition American Whiskies that pay homage to the sixth-generation Master Distiller, Parker Beam. Beam has dedicated the last 50 years of his live to producing outstanding whiskey for Heaven Hills Distilleries to share with the world.

With his most recent diagnosis of ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, Beam has used his recent misfortune to help raise money for the cause. For every purchase of Parker’s Heritage, Heaven Hill Distilleries will donated $5 to the ALS Promise Find. Beam and his family hope that this contribution will help raise awareness and ultimately find a cure for the crippling disease.

The 8th edition is a no frills bourbon that could be enjoyed every day, and never grow tiresome. It’s a 13 year old cask strength whiskey. Beam has also turned to a wheat whiskey for this year’s release. The batch is pulled from a year 2000 barrel the top floor of Rickhouse Y at Heaven Hill. In the glass, the whiskey takes on a deep amber color, which is unusual for bourbon. The aging and lack of chill filtration. Below you will find scent, taste and finish details.

The Nose

The aroma has hints of caramel, vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon. There is also a subtle piney scent present from the rye.

The Palate

On the first sip there is a pleasantly sweet start, with notes of toffee, ripe cherry and red pepper. The oak also offers a dryness flavor, with leather and molasses.

The Finish

Expect a long and warming finish. It’s also a bit on the strong side.

We recommend Parker’s Heritage 8th Edition for a variety of cocktails, or if you please, drinking it neat is also very enjoyable. If you aren’t a fan of an oaky taste add a splash of water makes it disappear.

Have you had a chance to get your hands on the Parker’s Heritage 8th Edition? What were your thoughts? What other bourbon releases are you looking forward to?

National Bourbon Heritage Month

In case you haven’t heard, September is National Bourbon Heritage Month. Let me remind you this isn’t just another media holiday created by Twitter, but in fact this celebration is officially recognized by the U.S. Senate. So grab your glasses and toast to a month full of bourbon!

The History

As of August 2007, every September is a reason to celebrate bourbon. The National Bourbon Heritage Month calls for the acknowledgement of bourbon as America’s “Native Spirit.” The bill was sponsored by Republican Senator Jim Bunning of Kentucky, and naturally was passed without any dispute. The Bourbon Heritage Month bill pays homage to the 1964 Act of Congress which declared bourbon to be “America’s Native Spirit.” This Act of Congress encourages Americans everywhere to embrace the tradition and deep-rooted legacy of bourbon that continues to flourish in the United States.

Celebrations

All around the United States in September, and particularly in Kentucky, people are finding ways to celebrate National Bourbon Heritage Month. Here are a few of the special events and promotions going on this month in honor of bourbon:

  • Angel’s Envy is giving back this month with their Toast to the Trees campaign. For every picture on social media with the hashtag, #AE4TheTrees, they will be planting a white oak tree. Angel’s Envy is pairing with The Arbor Day Foundation to ensure bourbon’s legacy for future generations.
  • The Kentucky Bourbon Festival starts September 11th in Bardstown, Kentucky. The festival lets you experience and taste the rich history of American bourbon distillation in the state that produces 95% of the world’s bourbon. Enjoy delicious food, smooth bourbon and great entertainment.
  • Payless Liquors, Jim Beam and Ruth’s Chris invite you to the Inagural Bourbon Dinner in honor of the new Ruth’s Chris location at the Ironworks at Keystone. Join us September 26th for a night of delicious food and drinks. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn and taste bourbon from the experts at Jim Beam. The Victorious Night

Superhero movies are very popular right now. These films make billions of dollars in the theaters and then proceed to make even more money from t-shirts, video games and toys. Why do these movies do so well? They’re fun of course, but how do they grab our imaginations and refuse to let go?

My theory is that people love a great dramatic performance. Whether it’s a heart-racing action movie or a flavorful beer (see where I’m going here?), we love the bright and the bold. If you want to see a good movie, I suggest you go rent Thor 2. If you want an amazing new brew, you need to keep reading.

First up we have Victory Brewing Company’s Hop Ranch Imperial India Pale Ale. If nothing else, this beer at least tells the uninitiated what IPA stands for. Brewed with the newly popular Mosaic and Azzaca hops, Hop Ranch is brewed to celebrate the farmers dedicated to harvesting the high alpha varieties that popularize good IPAs. While the nose on this beer is big and tropical, the bold flavors reminded me of candied grapefruit, pine sap and caramel slathered toast. With seasonal availability, Hop Ranch is one IPA you need to try, and try fast.

We also recently got a hold of Two Brothers Brewing Company’s Night Cat. This dark, hoppy wheat beer got an 86% on Beer Advocate, and we can see why. Brewed with a Citra hops (of Three Floyd’s Zombie Dust fame!), Night Cat is a deliciously well balanced addition to the Two Brothers lineup. Its citrus and tropical fruity notes balance well with a strong, rich and roasted malt backbone that make for a really tasty seasonable beer. Come in and grab a case, because this one is going to fly off shelves.

Ready to slip on your body armor and drive the Batmobile down to get these beers? We understand. Or maybe you’re not a fan of fruity beers? Please feel free to talk to our knowledgeable staff. They’re always happy to help you find the perfect flavor. You can also reach out to us on Facebook, Twitter, or our website. We’d love to hear your thoughts on Hop Ranch, Night Cat or both.
