Cowboys vs. Jackalopes

You’ll need a campfire, beautiful scenery and a chilled glass to enjoy this bourbon and rye beverage.

High West Distillery and Saloon dubbed this unique whiskey, Bourye, “bou” for bourbon and “rye” for rye whiskey. The unusual name is used to signify the matchless taste that follows the process of blending rich bourbon and premium rye whiskey. Just as you would with any quality whiskey, this refreshment is meant to be enjoyed with no ice and sipped straight or with a little water.

While the ratio of component whiskey remains top secret, High West Distillery does boast using a 9-year-old straight bourbon, 13-year-old straight rye whiskey, and another 17-year-old straight rye whiskey to formulate this clean and crisp concoction.  The whiskey is bottled at 46% ABV leaving it with a 92 Proof. Being one of High West’s all-time favorites, it comes as no surprise that this whiskey was awarded Best Blended bourye-bottleWhiskey in 2010 and frequents great reviews.

“It starts out more like a high rye content bourbon, with the molasses, caramel, coconut cream, sweet corn and honey-kissed fruit marrying nicely with the dried spice (vanilla, cinnamon, brisk mint). But then on the latter of the palate, the rye really kicks in. The whiskey gets bold, the rye becomes intense, with a dried spice finish.” – John Hansel, Malt Advocate Magazine

Possibly the most interesting element of this whiskey is the story behind the picture on the back label. The bottle shows a picture of a jackalope, also known as a antelrabbit. The jackalope is described as an antlered species of rabbit that was found in the Old West and hunted by cowboys. Legends say the best way to catch a jackalope was to lure it with whiskey, as they have a great liking for this particular drink. Once the jackalope was good and drunk, it became easier for the cowboys to hunt and capture. Although this species is labeled as a mythical animal, it is still rumored to still be in existence in areas of the American West.

Don’t miss out on this Old Western style whiskey, this is sure to be a summer camping essential! You can reserve a bottle through our Contact page or pick up a bottle at your local Payless Liquor store.
