An American Native Spirit
In 1964, the U.S. Congress declared bourbon an American native spirit in that it is a unique product of the United States. Thus, federal law defines bourbon as whiskey that contains at least 51% corn and has been matured for a minimum of two years in fresh charred white oak barrels. Thus, all bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon.
Why Kentucky?
Kentucky is the bourbon capital of the world because Kentucky produces the most and the best bourbon in the world. There are more barrels of bourbon distilling in distilleries across the state of Kentucky than there are people living there. At any given moment, around 7.5 million barrels are aging in charred white oak barrels in Kentucky.
